Jean Smith Fortenberry
July 23, 1926 - April 20, 1999
This photograph of my mother was taken in 1944 during her early career woman phase. After graduating from Draughon's Business College, she went to work for the Avalanche-Journal as secretary to Charles Guy. She was later recruited to work for the vice president of Lubbock National Bank. After marrying, she spent 20 years as mother and homemaker. She then took a refresher course at Draughon's (free as a graduate) and re-entered the workforce. She spent 31 years with the Texas A&M Extension Service, retiring as office manager for the district agents.
