saltmarsh
The barrier islands forming the Outer Banks of North Carolina are moving line of sand in the open Atlantic. Harkers Island is connected to the main land by bridges spanning expanses of saltmarsh. Located on the east headland of Harkers Island, the Cape Lookout National Seashore offers a study in island ecology. A boardwalk crosses a saltmarsh to Core Sound. The mudflats support cordgrass and a multitude of fiddler crabs.
