"found in a desert land"

Moses died in the desert before finding the Promised Land.  Junior provides guidance in arid Albuquerque.  Why use regular exterior paint when the wall of your business can display religious messages?

this time last year

This time last year I was wandering the streets of Luxembourg.  Wonder where I was during earlier years?  Makes me wish I had seriously taken up journaling.

dying to know

Another installment of strange cemetery sights:  Wonder who needs information in a cemetery -- the visitors or the occupants?  Being curious, I opened the mailbox and found a list of cemetery rules.  I don't think that those who have been interred since the 1880s really care about bearing firearms, dogs running free and seasonal removal of wreaths.

Need inexpensive siding for your building?  Eddie took going "green" or, in this case, "orange" to heart with the ultimate recycling and collectibles.  Hard to miss this BBQ joint as you travel down the street!

"the flavor lasts"

Clinton boasts the largest downtown square in Missouri and is part of the historic Main Street program.  Streets are lined with original storefronts and restored facades.  During revitalization, many painted signs were uncovered.  The Chamber of Commerce lady said the Wrigley sign was original.  According to Wrigley advertising, United Profit-Sharing Coupons were offered in the 1920s and 30s.  They could be redeemed for items in a catalog (Remember Green Stamps?)

lulu

For 25 years, Lulu and her swaying hips have lured her hometown friends in Springfield to the concession truck to sample a Pineapple Whip.  The primary fruit juice concoction flavor is pineapple, but sometimes a second flavor like grape or strawberry-kiwi may be offered.  (PS Lulu's "grass" skirt is made from weed whacker cord.)

If you are taking a leisurely drive along the back roads of Missouri, be aware that state road signs can make you aware of the distance between facilities.

knob noster house

We made a short trip to the village of Knob Noster because I was intrigued by the name.  A knob is a geographical feature of a rounded hill.  I didn't find the knobs of Noster any different from the surrounding Missouri hills.  With a population of 2,000 Knob Noster's claim to fame is nearby Whiteman Air Force Base, home of the B-2 bomber, and Knob Noster State Park.  This is one of the few unique buildings we saw.  One block of the two-block downtown was barricaded for the first day of school block party so I missed half the town.

People are dying to get into the Sunset Hill Cemetery, but it appears that access is not easily obtained.  It is amusing to note the contrast between sign locations and perceived meanings.  The marker for a  narrow one-way lane can be interpreted differently.

old drum, the hunting dog

Lore has it that Warrensburg, Missouri is the origin of the saying "a man's best friend is his dog."  According to the story, the hunting dog Old Drum was shot by a neighbor who suspected him of killing sheep.  After many mistrials in 1870, the dispute ended up in the Missouri Supreme Court where the attorney eulogized Old Drum and won the plaintiff $50.  The statue of Old Drum was erected in 1950 and an additional memorial stands on the banks of Big Creek where the body was found.

Bill Marvy may have built a better barber pole, but a more recognized product is the Steril-Ray Ultra Violet Sanitizer which was introduced in the 1960s.  Pop's barber shop may have an original model.

This morning stretched my photographic skills.  I have a fair history with portraits of two-year old girls but a two-year old horse is a different story.  Dundee was a bit uncooperative but his "older" brother Dexter was an excellent model.  Mom was pleased with the results.

seasonal discord

Blooming flower boxes line quaint European streets.  However, if one looks closely at this window box, the Christmas decals behind the geraniums can be spotted.  Christmas in August?  Or did the students in the classrooms of the Trinity Church celebrate year-round?

happy birthday, suzanne

Hard to believe my sister is now grandmother (or SuSu) to two little girls.  Suzanne was born a few years ago on a hot August night after the New Deal Lions Club watermelon feast at the clubhouse.  I was shuffled off to BaBa's for the rest of the night.  When she cut off one of those ringlets with her little scissors, Mother cried.
