The red wheel on this vintage pickup caught my eye.  In high school I drove a similar-colored pickup -- it wasn't vintage though, just a used '59 Chevy Fleetside with yellow wheels.  It had "four on the floor" but no horsepower.  We got it up to 78 mph once coming off the overpass.

You might think this is the ubiquitous spring iris photo.  Think again.  This is the end result of the first steps to reach a desired goal.  I have long admired the digital photographic art of Roxi Hardegree and wished to do something similar.  To get this far, I had to learn how to use the camera on my new tablet.  Then I had to upload the  Snapseed app (with more apps to follow) and then play with its applications.  I know there is an easier way to get the photo from the tablet to the blog but until I know how, this was a four-step endeavor!

Today the Canadian geese must have felt like they hadn't flown far enough south!  It did warm up to 36 degrees after a low of 9.  Just wait until Monday when the temperature is predicted to be in the 70s.  What snow?

Great gallery talk today by sculptor Garland Weeks.  He discussed his works like "To Wet to Plow" seen here.  The "Balance of Nature" series depicts life and death through bronze skulls and indigenous animals.  His emphasis on design and composition is also applicable to photographers.  See these sculptures by a native Texan, represented across nationwide, through February 12 at the Buddy Holly Center.

Thirsty? If you visit the water fountains on the second floor of newly-renovated Maddox Engineering Research Center (the old Mass Comm building) at Texas Tech, look up -- that's my photograph! Local artists were asked to provide art and I was honored that five of my photographs were chosen (purchased actually!)

It was probably my affinity for weird signs that got an image accepted into the upcoming "When Language Meets Art" exhibit at the Underwood.  Like my take on this "body" sign:  welding? tattoos? flats fixed?  boob or lube job?

They don't build them like this any more.  Texas Technological College was established in 1923 and in the Fall of 1925 all 313 of the School of Engineering students attended classes in the Textile Engineering Building. According to the master plan, the Textile Building at the north end of the Engineering Key was a counterpart to the Administration Building to the south.  The intricate portal is reminiscent of Southwest missions and is in keeping with the campus Spanish  Renaissance style. In the niches traditionally reserved for saints are stylized cotton bales -- the patron saint of the South Plains.

In spite of their sea-life appearance, these are edible gourmet mushrooms.  In addition to his brick-and-mortar business, this entrepreneur also has Mushrooms Fresh-Organics.  I was tempted at this morning Downtown Farmers Market, but passed.  After researching some recipes, I'll buy some next time.

An unusual sight along the Loop is two toilets on a concrete slab, shining in the morning light.  Naturally I did the u-turn thing (actually made a block) and went to photographically preserve this occasion.  The demolition man on the front loader looked askance when I said I wanted to take pictures.  He told me I was welcome to take the toilets as well -- but I declined.

As I've driven down Main, I noticed the rear of what I took to be a pink travel trailer parked under a carport. Today the vehicle was in the adjacent parking lot.  Instead of a trailer, it turned out to be a vintage Toyota camper -- which might have been considered a "hippie van" in my day!  This one is completely decorated and even sports a mini shrine with a doll relic.  The bumper proclaims it to be "Lady Alisha's Emporium" which puzzled me because it didn't appear to be a mobile shop.  A quick dictionary reference enlightened: "from Greek emporos 'merchant', based on a stem meaning 'to journey'. I always thought it would have been fun to journey in such a van until my tastes changed and I now consider "Motel 6" roughing it!

With its 1965 decorative facade removed, the bare bones parking garage awaits renovation with its new life as the parking garage for the Citizens Tower municipal employees.  The garage's accompanying structure was built in 1965 as the Citizens National Bank and then refitted as the Omni. The structure languished in a dying downtown and its marble panels started falling to their death on the brick streets.  The rebirth is a difficult process.

There's one in every crowd!  While 3-year old Collier enjoyed the swimming birthday party, he was ready for the next step: cake and presents.  Collier refused to give up his boots for summer so wears them with his shorts (has he been reading fashion magazines?)
