santa and the cat

Eleven months of the year Bill and Frances Chancy are typical Tahoka residents but come December they become Mr. and Mrs. Claus when their place south of town is transformed into Santa Land.  Visitors may drive through the four acres of light displays, nativity scenes, inflatable reindeer  and cartoon cut-outs.  Then you can park and visit with the Clauses - even the farm cat gets into the act!

Santa depends on donations to decorate the wonderland.  Who knew that empty bulk canola oil containers would make a Santa Land frame work for arches and fences and square presents!  The wonderful sunset was donated by Mother Nature.

santa land tree

Tonight the lights went on at Santa Land illuminating a Christmas wonderland. A multitude awaited the fire truck which guided Santa's sleigh.  This is Santa's 58th appearance in Lubbock at Santa Land.  New this year, joining Duck Dynasty was the cast of Frozen (in plywood of course).  And the Lubbock Police Department added more prairie dogs to their display.  Where else can you see Peter Pan, Batman, Shrek and other favorite characters at Christmas?

we're here!

With great fanfare, Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrive at Santa Land.  Escorted by a fire truck, their sleigh (aka golf cart) and reindeer wend through the crowd waiting in line for their turn to tell Santa their Christmas wishes.  (Don't ask; I don't know how; I just like it.)

willie welcomes you to santa land

Duck Dynasty has even made it to Lubbock's Santa Land.  In addition to the traditional Mr. and Mrs. Claus, elves and reindeer, Santa Land is populated with Batman, Peter Pan and the pirate ship, Cinderella and all the attending princesses, dancing polar bears and I think I saw Spongebob Squarepants.  Plan your visit around the predicted cold front; the exhibit closes Monday.

christmas prairie dog

Only in West Texas would you find a Christmas display featuring prairie dogs (although to the uninitiated, they may appear to be woodchucks chucking wood).  Half a dozen prairie dog figures occupy the space - imitating busy elves, I'm assuming.  Santa Land is the City's annual, free Christmas gift to the community with the opportunity to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.  The prairie dog display is situated between the Nativity scene with baby Jesus and the jungle scene with Simba the Lion King.

career santa

If one carries a big camera and walks with authority, one can enter the Claus's cabin by the exit and bypass the long line.  The things one does for a shot!
