The town of Earth, Texas is not concerned about the planet Earth's population explosion.  Established in 1924 by rancher Williams Halsell from land he purchased from the XIT Ranch for $2 an acre, the town is an agricultural community.  The origin of the name Earth has many stories but it appears that Earth is the only place in the U.S. called Earth although there's Black Earth, Wisc, Blue Earth, Minn, Earth City, Mo and Middle Earth, Md.  To find Earth travel west on US 70 from Plainview-- through Quarterway and Halfway! Gotta love these place names.

texas independence day

From the Texas Declaration of Independence - March 2, 1836

"When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted, and so far from being a guarantee for the enjoyment of those inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression. "

These words, written 176 years ago claiming Texas' independence from Mexico, have a contemporary ring.
