salute to the unknown soldier

Memorial Day 2008 I was at Arlington Cemetery, along with about 70,000 veterans on motorcycles who were participating in the annual Rolling Thunder rally.  The purpose of Rolling Thunder is to honor military veterans, particularly those Prisoners Of War-Missing In Action (POW/MIA).  In addition to the "Ride to the Wall" to visit the Viet Nam Memorial, veterans also attend the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

let freedom ring

 The Washington Monument is an enduring symbol of America's freedom.  Its cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848.  Each Memorial Days tens thousands of veterans convene in Washington for a motorcycle ride to commemorate the sacrifices for freedom.

The Iwo Jima Memorial, also known as the U. S. Marine Corps War Memorial, honors the Marines who have died defending the United States since 1775. The Iwo Jima Memorial is located near Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. My dad, a Marine navigator, flew in C-47s over the South Pacific, with landings at Iwo Jima.
