child to child

A child's grave is always sad but to find a tribute placed over 150 years after the death is poignant.  In 1858, the these three children--ages 7, 6 and 5-- died within months of each other  No wonder the parents erected a pillared monument with statues of the children within.  The Magnolia Cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, dates back to 1852 and the Battle of Baton Rouge.

class of 1966

Near Bulldog Stadium and Swenson Park, this graffiti caught my eye.  I wondered if the Spur High School Class of 1966 went to Galveston on their senior trip.  Then I noticed the headstones.  A closer look showed the names of those who were in the senior class and had passed away.  In a small town like Spur, the kids had probably been together since the first grade. This memorial wall honors those nine classmates who won't make the 50 year reunion in 2016.

cherub in a chair

The cherub sits quietly in three-year old Eric's chair.  Placed at the grave by grieving parents, the angel watches over the child.

our hero

Amidst the uniform lines of upright headstones, this large red rock stands out.  It marks the final resting place of Willis Waymon Green, a WWII veteran.  The federal government furnishes, at no cost, markers for deceased veterans at any cemetery.  Wonder why Willis has a rock?  Admittedly it befits the landscape of this plot of land off the Llano Estacado.  He was a decorated serviceman, serving in the European Campaign and Africa and earning 5 Bronze Stars, the Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart -- according to this epitaph.  Rest in peace - this Bud's for you.
