plaza blanca

Not everyone would take NM-554N to CR155 past the small houses of local residents to the wooden gate and then follow a dirt track until a fork in the road.  The left fork goes to the "Dar Al Islam" mosque and the right fork takes you to Plaza Blanca.  These white cliffs were made famous by Georgia O'Keeffe.  Well worth the trip and short hike.

ghost ranch

Ghost Ranch outside Abiquiu was home to artist Georgia O'keeffe for over 50 years and the vistas are still inspiring.

Isolated amid the grandeur that is Yellowstone, the area around Mammoth Hot Springs with dead trees and the spill of travertine offers a bleak landscape.

circles and squares

Returning from the hills and trees of Tennessee, the landscape of the Plains from the air is welcoming.

straight lines
(but not necessarily perpendicular)

Our flat South Plains landscape is linear and often angular.  Sometimes because of wind and erosion those signs are not necessarily perpendicular to the horizon.  This photo also brings to mind that childhood riddle:
Railroad crossing; watch out for the cars.  Can you spell that without any "r"?
Surely you know the answer.

the badlands

This broken landscape earned the name "the Badlands."  Difficult terrain, bad water and sometimes bad guys were encountered in early days.  With each passing cloud, the lighting changes the color of the strata.
