harvest at sunset

Farmers don't quit at 5:00.  This crew may be stripping until midnight to get the cotton harvested.  The boll buggy, pulled by a tractor, follows the stripper, which dumps its load when full.  The boll buggy then transports the cotton to the module builder.  A completed module (on the left) contains 13-15 bales and a bale of cotton typically weighs about 500 pounds.  In case you didn't know, Texas is the leading cotton-producing state.

agricultural architecture

I wanted to entitle this "bridges of hale county" after the book Bridges Of Madison County.  I found the pivot very reminiscent of bridge trusses although there are no bridges in Hale County or anywhere within a 100 miles probably.

sunset over the water tower

Last night I could have used a great sunset for my landscapes but, alas, no clouds.  Tonight was a great sunset behind a mundane scene.  This is the New Deal water tower located by the Fortenberry shop.  New Deal was incorporated in 1970 and my dad was the first mayor.  That's when the water system was installed and Pop donated the land for the water tower.

sunset

After the heat of the day, the summer sunset paints the evening with a brief burst of color.

winter sunset

We awoke to a smattering of snow but the day ended with bright sunshine -- high 13 degrees.

sunset at haystack rock

I've been browsing the catalogues looking for my next photography tour.  Sunsets, beaches, congenial camera enthusiasts, new adventures -- it's fun just reading and wishing.

red sky at night - sailor's delight

There aren't many sailors on the High Plains, but we all delight in the great sunsets we've had lately.  According to lore, that signifies a clear day on the morrow.  If the forecasts hold, tomorrow may be our relatively nice day for the week -- that darn arctic front is coming.

sunset in the badlands

The photographers, armed with cameras with telephoto lenses mounted on tripods, awaited a glorious sunset.  Alas, the few clouds disappeared as darkness approached and there were no clouds as the sun  sank behind the hills.  Only the magic of post-processing revealed an eerie alien landscape.

adios 2012

As the sun sets on 2012, one looks back and ponders the paths of the past year.  I can mark my travels by bodies of water visited over the last 12 months.  Atlantic Ocean at North Carolina, Pacific Ocean at Bodega Bay California, Gulf of Mexico at St. Petersburg Florida, Lake Pontchartrain and Mississippi River in Louisiana, Eagle Mountain Lake at Azle Texas, Ohio River at Cincinnati, Rio Chama outside Santa Fe, Monongahela River in West Virginia, Detroit River in Michigan, Missouri River in Springfield, Scottsdale Canal in Arizona and Niagara Falls.

Safe travels and happy trails in 2013!
