food truck fest

Lubbock's former train station welcomed vehicles of a different type this evening.  Crickets Avenue between the depot and the Buddy Holly Plaza was site of the first annual Food Truck Fest.  After lengthy discussion, City Council approved the roving eateries and tonight 13 of them lined the street.  Toward the end of the evening, one couldn't see the trucks for the customers.  The street was shoulder-to-shoulder with lines for brisket, tacos, hot dogs and snowcones. People then took their meals to the Plaza and enjoyed the music of the Kinky Wizards.  A good time was had by all.

birthday greetings

Today would have been Buddy Holly's 79th birthday.  The Buddy Holly Center celebrated with live music (playing Buddy tunes of course).  Bundt cake and root beer was available (and real beer at the cash bar).  Lubbockites came out to wish this native son a happy birthday.

the day the music died

There were crowds of people today playing tribute to Buddy Holly on the 56th anniversary of the fatal plane crash.  The trolley leaving the Buddy Holly Center was packed with people wanting to see the significant Buddy Holly sites in Lubbock. The sculpture created by the late Steve Teeters replicates the glasses worn by Buddy that fateful day.  Those glasses, now on display in the museum, sat in a manila envelop in the sheriff's office in Mason City, Iowa for 21 years.  When discovered, they were returned to Maria Elena who placed them in Buddy's hometown for the fans to view.

don't mess with texas

The Buddy Holly Center has joined the "Don't Mess with Texas" campaign by adding the trash can.  It's just down the wall from the geodetic marker placed by the U. S. Coast Guard in 1933.

Wonder which one attracts more attention?

shadows on brick

At high noon today at the Buddy Holly Center, I was attracted by the shadows of the patio furniture.  BHC is situated in the old train depot (hence the name "Depot District") and a set of rails still can be seen in the courtyard.  These bricks would have stories to tell from nights of the Depot Bar & Grill -- long before the District was a concept.

neon buddy

As I drive about the city, I'm looking for neon signs but I fear brightly lit cowboys, windmills and dancing girls are a thing of the past.  If there is a neon sign, it's usually the "open" variety purchased at WalMart.
