house or sculpture?

Before you say to yourself "Oh Sandy went to Ransom Canyon to photograph the Bruno House," I'll let you in on a little-known secret.  There is a model of the Steel House in Lubbock.  The late Robert Bruno spent decades constructing this residence/sculpture art on the bluff overlooking Ransom Canyon Lake.  It attracted scores of photographers, generated tons of discussion and served as the background for the 2007 Neiman-Marcus catalog.  Now a private residence, the house is sometimes open to the public during Christmas tours.  However, a model of the Steel House can be found in a weedy field on the east side of Lubbock.

victory in jesus

The large letters "Victory in Jesus" attract attention as one drives along 34th Street.  The Faith Temple was built in 1952 from a metal Quonset hut with a stone façade.  The cornerstone on "The House that Faith Built" shows Boyd and Helen McSpadden as the "Singing Pastors."  What I didn't know was that the son Gary McSpadden is an award winning gospel singer who sang with The Statesmen and the Oak Ridge Boys and worked with Bill Gaither.  To hear some the Boyd and Helen gospel music on 78s, google them on YouTube.

illumination

Today I toured the Wiggins complex which offices University Housing and Hospitality Services.  They used black and white photographs by Art Limmer as artwork (http://www.artielimmer.com).  I love Artie's work -- he has captured the spirit of Texas Tech.  I never thought about the Carol of Lights sans color but was taken by the Administration Building in b/w by Artie.  Enough that I hurried home to see what some of my Christmas shots would look like in monochrome.
Season's Greetings in June!
