Great gallery talk today by sculptor Garland Weeks.  He discussed his works like "To Wet to Plow" seen here.  The "Balance of Nature" series depicts life and death through bronze skulls and indigenous animals.  His emphasis on design and composition is also applicable to photographers.  See these sculptures by a native Texan, represented across nationwide, through February 12 at the Buddy Holly Center.

out in the rain

 

"Out in the Rain" is a fountain sculpture in the Oakland Cemetery of Atlanta. It is a replica of a sculpture by Galloway & Graff of Philadelphia, done around 1876, which may have been a copy of a sculpture exhibited in the Italian section of the United States International Exhibition of 1876. The Atlanta cast was made for $96.80 and was commissioned from the J. L. Mott Iron Works in 1913.

the audience

 

The Audience is a set of two original sculptural art installations placed on the northeast and northwest corners of the Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays. The exuberant fans, created by  Canadian artist Michael Snow, greet visitors with variations of fan behavior.  During my visit to Toronto, I resembled the photographer, with camera glued to face.  I became an exuberant fan of Toronto.

art is in the eye of the beholder

 

One felt watched while admiring the Christmas decorations in downtown Dallas.   In case you thought this was merely a 30-foot sculpture of an eyeball, you must read the description:  “Eye” by Chicago-based artist Tony Tasset acts as a symbol of knowledge and power juxtaposed against the pop-culture notion of larger-than-life commercial advertising." Called by one newspaper "an ocular oddity" the sculpture is part of the Joule Hotel's collection of contemporary art.  You may eyeball the the orb -- through the fence!

a lotta bull

Art in Texas abounds with cow sculptures -- from the Dallas' Cattle Drive Pioneer Plaza to Lubbock's Ranching Heritage Center.  But sometimes one finds art in the middle of nowhere, out standing in a field --like the "Brindle Bit Bull" found where County Road 236 meets Hwy 380 in Throckmorton County.  For miles, as you drive the lonely road, you wonder "what is that up ahead."  And then you see it - the "World's Largest Steel Longhorn."  It  was created in 2011 by Joe Barrington, who also made the World's Largest Buffalo Skull in Abilene. At 22 feet, this rusty bull dwarfs Lubbock "Purple Bull" (see August 13, 2014 post).  When you have opportunity to travel between Throckmorton and Haskell, keep an eye out for the bull wearing the Brindle Bit brand -- and you will know it's a bull, not a steer, by the equipment.

"Texas Rising" by Joe O'Connell and Blessing Hancock is the latest public art to grace the Texas Tech campus.  It is the focal point of West Village, the newest student housing featuring apartments for upper classmen.  The 9-point steel star glistens in the sun but I'm making a point to return in the evening to see the illuminated sculpture change colors.

Where else would you find a Purple Bull but in the Art District? 

 

I never saw a purple cow

I never hope to see one

This sculpture is part of the Art on the Llano Project and installed by the Texas Department of Transportation.  Entitled "Purple Bull" by artist Jeffie Brewer, this longhorn has no distinguishing gender markings so the sex is subject to interpretation.  The purple cow replaces the black spare tire which was more BS than this sculpture which does represent the region.

house or sculpture?

 

Before you say to yourself "Oh Sandy went to Ransom Canyon to photograph the Bruno House," I'll let you in on a little-known secret.  There is a model of the Steel House in Lubbock.  The late Robert Bruno spent decades constructing this residence/sculpture art on the bluff overlooking Ransom Canyon Lake.  It attracted scores of photographers, generated tons of discussion and served as the background for the 2007 Neiman-Marcus catalog.  Now a private residence, the house is sometimes open to the public during Christmas tours.  However, a model of the Steel House can be found in a weedy field on the east side of Lubbock.

The Lubbock Regional Public Safety Memorial is reaching completion with the setting of the bronze monument.  The memorial at Leroy Elmore Park will honor first responders from Lubbock and 15 surrounding counties who have fallen in the line of duty since the 1940s.  Lubbock sculptor Garland Weeks was commissioned for the bronze sculpture depicting first responders.
