Red Umbrella Project #46:  Singing Cowboy

This was a profitable shoot.  Someone left a dollar bill tucked in the guitar of this Jeffie Brewer sculpture.

cowboy day at the fort

There wasn't a big crowd at Cowboy Day at Francisco Fort in La Veta.  In fact, I caught this cowboy napping at his station.  Francisco Fort Museum is a collection of buildings, artifacts, and collections.   Founded in 1958, the museum is situated on the site of the original adobe fort, built in 1862.

It's boots and chaps
It's cowboy hats
It's spurs and latigo
It's the ropes and the reins

grooming for the grand parade

The 74th annual ABC Rodeo is in town.  Outside the Coliseum, a cowboy grooms his horse before the Grand Parade.

ride'em cowboy

Many firefighters have a "second job."  This cowboy had firefighting as his second job.  Now retired, he runs cattle and rides in parades (and his mother was my third grade teacher).  There was a reason the Shallowater Harvest Festival put the horses and sheriff's posse at the end of the parade.  Wouldn't want to mistake horse patties for peanut patties!

welcome to Jackson

There was just enough time before the tour orientation for a quick walk around the square.  I want to go back to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar to see if the sign is lit up at night.

this way

"Follow the Smoke" is a BBQ joint in Brownfield, but don't follow the smoke on a Saturday or Sunday --they're not open.  The sign is neat but it bothers me that the cowboy just has red pegs and no boots.

Carrizozo cowboy

The sign welcomes you to eat and drink in Carrizozo but the place is closed -- literally shut down and boarded up! If I had "do-overs" for this photo, which shows 12th Street Historic two blocks in Carrizozo, I sit on the ground and shoot up, silhouetting the cut-out against the sky.  However, these days shooting from low angles is easier said than done!

chaparajos

The Spanish brought chaparajos to the Americas when colonists began establishing huge rancheros in Mexico and the southwestern areas that eventually became Texas, California and  New Mexico. Shortened to "chaps," the leather leggings fit over a rider's pants, protecting his legs from brush and helping him stay warm and dry when he was out looking for cattle in rough country.

working cattle

Every afternoon, Jake and his horse "work cattle"-- or rather they give the cattle a work-out.  Jake and his J&B Cattle provide competitive bucking bulls for events.  The bulls are run around the cattle pen working up a sweat -- the bovine version of jazzercise!

chuckwagon cowboy

Tutorial #3 "Adding Background to a Portrait"  in improving my photoshop skills. This image of the Block Y Chuckwagon cowboy had a washed out sky and with a few detractors.  Erase the telephone poles, add a background texture and the focal point is now the weathered face.
