br-br-br-bridge

In the spirit of New Year beginnings, I was purging files-- many of those I "might do something with someday."  I kept coming back to this one and decided it was a keeper.  I like the rhythm of the  distorted lights on the Oakland Bay Bridge caused by the ferry's engines and the bouncing of the waves (trying shooting at dusk on a moving boat!)

walnut street bridge

Qhen built in 1890, the 2,376 feet Walnut Street Bridge over the Tennessee River connected downtown Chattanooga with the north bank. .  The Walnut Street Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1990. Now a pedestrian bridge, the structure is part of the historic arts district.

chandor chinese bridge

Douglas Chandor, an English artist, married  local girl Ina Kuteman in 1934 and they settled in her hometown of Weatherford.  They surrounded their home with English and Chinese-themed gardens.  Today Chandor Gardens are open to the public.  I hadn't heard of either the artist nor the gardens, but enjoyed visiting this picturesque setting in the Historic District.  And because last Friday was National Garden Day, my take-home gift was a small Natchez crape myrtle -- already planted in my yard!

winter fishing

Lubbock doesn't have ice fishing like Minnesota but these guys braved a winter afternoon to cast a line at Mackenzie Park.  Their favorite spot is the bridge spanning the waters of the Yellow House Canyon where the Blackwater Draw and Yellow House Draw, tributaries of the Brazos River, merge.  This bridge was built in the late 1930s as part of a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) project.  I bet it is featured in tons of old photographs as Mackenzie Park was a popular gathering spot for local youth, glider pilots and airmen.  This is my mother, about age 18 in her career days working at the Avalanche-Journal and Lubbock National Bank, posed at the same bridge.

the red light house

The Red Light House, also known as the Southwest Reef Lighthouse on the Atchafalaya River across from Morgan City, was built in 1856 and its service was discontinued in 1917.  It sat in rust until 1987 when the town of Berwick moved it 25 miles and located in a park.  I always look for lighthouses but didn't expect to find one in Louisiana. (And I got to drive across the Long-Allen Bridge of 1933, once the major crossing along the Old Spanish Trail).

the bridges of morgan city

Morgan City, Louisiana in St. Mary's Parish is theoretically located on Tigre Island and bridges across the Berwick  Bay and Atchafalaya River connect it to the mainland.  I haven't yet seen the noted swamp land featured in the 1917 Tarzan movie but we drove through many of the 44,000 acres of sugar cane.

bridge to spring

Although this image was taken in the fall, it is reminiscent of spring.  Hopefully spring is around the corner - right after this next cold spell!  The grounds of the Columbia Gorge Hotel are beautiful with streams, bridges, waterfalls and ducks.  The hotel is situated along the Columbia River and still emanates an early 1900s elegance.

bridge on the moselle revisited

I'd like to title this photo "nun on a bridge" but the zoom wasn't long enough.  Besides the focal points are the arches and reflections.
