our lady of the flour tortilla
former patron saint of the
Texas Tech Red Raiders

A fun, but short-lived tradition at Texas Tech football games was the tossing of flour tortillas.  Now banned, a flour tortilla on the field could be a 15-yard penalty for the Raiders.

missing pieces of history

The passage of time has left missing pieces of history in this mural located in East Lubbock.  There's no date so it's difficult to know how long the mural has weathered.  There's not much information-- a sidebar notes "Clea Verven" as the artist with names under "Art Corps."  The subject is apropos for the neighbor honoring both national and local black leaders (Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King, Mary Bethune as well as Lubbock educator Struggs and physician  Chatman). This neighborhood shopping center is occupied by a catering company, two beauty shops, a barber shop and an insurance agency.  Businesses seldom support art; too bad that this mural can't be touched up.  But most people, like me, probably don't know it exists.

mother teresa of the plains

Art is where you found it and here it was on Farm-to-Market Road 835.  For many years, the Strip and liquor stores in the county were the only places to buy beer.  After the liquor referendum, packages stores popped up on every block in town and places like the Lakeway Mini-Mart and Beer Store went out of business.  Lakeway, on the way to Buffalo Lake, was a more convenient stop than its rival Pinkie's--on the other side of the road.  Today the building has new life.  My educated guess, after peeking in the windows, is that it will be a motorcycle shop.  It's not yet open for business but the mural attracts attention.  I'm curious about the purpose of the art which features Mother Teresa, Ghandi and Martin Luther King.  Mother Teresa is emaciated, Ghandi resembles E.T, and MLK is a bit Picasso-esque-- but still a great example of street art for Lubbock.  This will be an interesting place to watch.

elvis sighting

A mural of rock and rock greats adorns a wall in downtown Clovis.  Elvis is bookended by Buddy on the left and Roy Orbison way on the right.  I seem to run into Elvis in lots of different places so I did a google search on "Elvis mural."  11,300 pictures appeared (OK some were duplicates) but Elvis is everywhere!  I couldn't determine how many towns were represented but resolve to keep a better record of where I spy Elvis.

1984 el camino

Hale Center has beautified downtown with murals depicting its history--from farming and ranching to the train station and the newspaper office.  A business man also got into the spirit, asking sign painter Steven Garcia to immortalize his 1984 El Camino pickup on the front of his business.  Visit downtown Hale Center (it won't take long to do the main drag) and check out the art.

As the deadline nears for entries to the 13th annual High and Dry exhibit, I browsed through the rejects from previous years.  Although fortunate enough to have images exhibited 10 of the 13 years, for every image selected there might be 4 rejected.  Each judge brings a different perspective to what reflects the people and land of semiarid regions.  Click here to see the 2011 exhibit.
