cash for signs

With all the great historic buildings and turn of the century (19th that is) homes in Ballinger, why did this junque store catch my attention for the blog?  Who knows?  Ballinger began as a railroad town in 1898 and the Santa Fe Depot now houses the Chamber of Commerce.  The Runnels county court house (fairly plain after being renovated in 1941 "modern" style) boasts of the largest landscaped lawn in the State of Texas.  The Andrew Carnegie Library, built in 1909, has been restored and is only one of five still standing in Texas.

lodging choices

If you are coming to Lubbock for a Texas Tech football game, the Stadium Motel is conveniently located across the street from Jones AT&T Stadium.  However, that probably would not be a good choice -- the reviews of the single-story, 20-room motel are bad and it ranks #46 out of 56 motels in Lubbock; besides, this evening it showed a "no vacancy" sign.  A few blocks away, past the high-rise apartment buildings, is the Overton Hotel, a AAA Four-Diamond facility.  Before the new constructions, when University Avenue was still College Avenue, J. T. Davis, father of Mac Davis, operated the College Courts, an efficiency apartment complex. Mac lived there while growing up, just south of the Stadium Motel, but progress has removed many of the old places -- Stadium Motel excluded. If you wish, at the Overton Hotel, you can request the Mac Davis Suite, named for the hometown boy who "done good."  Located on the 15th floor, the Mac Davis Suite has a panoramic view of Lubbock and will only set you back $999.00 a night (breakfast included).

diversification

Running a restaurant in a small town is tough business.  The secret to success must be diversification:

1.  Take out orders
2.  Today chile rellenos
3.   Menudo -- rated #1 in the Panhandle
4.  Laundry drop off service
5.  Booth rental spaces
6.  RV park - discount lowest rate in town (includes free meal)

Unfortunately, one can't do business if the place is closed at 1:00 pm on a Saturday.

advertising

This auto shop offers interesting insights of the owner.  The painted hot rod is flanked  by what might be illustrations of Nicolas and Aurelia-- the names on the plaque above the door with the silhouette of Jesus.  Then there is the shrine to Mary painted on the wall as  protection for property, home and  inhabitants.   The values of Martinez are visible on his business - God, family and, mostly likely, honesty.
