Stari Grad

Stari Grad on the northern end of the island of Hvar is the oldest town in Croatia --settled by Greeks in 834 BC.  One advantage of cruising toward the end of tourist season is the lack of crowds.  Pots, doors, shutters were painted this chartreuse like it was the town's signature color.

city power & light

Today the community of Crosbyton, population less than 2,000, is surrounded by wind turbines and the municipal power company is out of business.  Nice jaunt today for "Junk in the Truck."

what's for breakfast?

My Spanish isn't that great but does this place have donkey (burro) intestines, tongue and guts on the menu?

ferry building

The landmark Ferry Building in San Francisco has been restored to its 1898 glory.  The lower level teems with ferry passengers, who pause along the way at wonderful shops in the Marketplace.  The grand upper level is home to offices.

custom painting

By the "no trespassing" sign I assumed this place was out of business.  Perhaps Mr. Perez would have done better with custom sign painting rather than auto painting.  And what is a "coyote stop"?

jackpot

I am not sure exactly what this establishment is.  We know gambling is illegal in Lubbock!  It might be a club but the building is certainly spiffier than its neighbors.

After class today I had a brief hour to explore the historic downtown district of Joplin.  I ventured upon the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts . Around since 1947 it is currently housed in the  historic Cosgrove Building.  The turn of the century (20th) building features bold graphics.  I especially like the bicycle rack on the sidewalk juxtapositioned by the building.

mr. windshield

The storms this spring and summer brought business to roofers, hail dent specialists and glass companies.  But it looks like this company did not survive the drought years.  Too bad, it's a neat sign.

a cheesy picture

With free-form graffiti art on three sides of the building, wonder why the artist added a realistic wedge of cheese?

apartment living

At The Rex Arms Apartments, there is more lacking than just the R and X missing from the sign.  An online ad states  "Discover the thrill, excitement and glee of living in Rex Arms Apartments" but I think the excitement left with the letters.  The front of the building is not much more thrilling than the alley side.

jesus sales

Thre 14th annual High and Dry Photography Exhibit has come to an end.  I was fortunate again this year to have an image selected.  Olton in Hale County qualifies as a "semi-arid" land - a qualification of the exhibit.  The unique business perspective of this place also appealed to the juror.

Oswego courthouse

I love this old tow with all its church spires, towers and turrets!  The Oswego Courthouse was built in 1859.  The domed cupolas join the other structures that pinpoint the town above the trees.  The Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Osewgo was a settlement in 1722 and Fort Ontario was built by the British in 1755.  Hard to imagine that kind of history when Lubbock was incorporated in 1909!

advertising

This auto shop offers interesting insights of the owner.  The painted hot rod is flanked  by what might be illustrations of Nicolas and Aurelia-- the names on the plaque above the door with the silhouette of Jesus.  Then there is the shrine to Mary painted on the wall as  protection for property, home and  inhabitants.   The values of Martinez are visible on his business - God, family and, mostly likely, honesty.
