Red Umbrella Project #47:  Lone Star

This defunct DQ has tried to be other things, unsuccessfully, but the painted wall still shows optimism.

Red Umbrella Project #46:  Singing Cowboy

This was a profitable shoot.  Someone left a dollar bill tucked in the guitar of this Jeffie Brewer sculpture.

Red Umbrella Project #43:  The Alley

Back in its day in the 1960s, the Abernathy bowling alley was a popular place with leagues for all ages (wonder what happened to my bowling ball?). After several uses, the building is now an event center.

Red Umbrella Project #40:  Gunslinger

The gunslinger sculpture at the NRA Whittington Center was created by George Montgomery, who wa a painter, furniture maker and sculptor as well as a western actor.  Supposedly Ronald Reagan was the model for this one, but Montgomery also based work on John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and his wife Dinah Shore.

Red Umbrella Project #37:  Remember the Alamo

In 2000 Plainview, Texas launched the Cattle Drive and Stampede with art-augmented fiberglass cows.  This longhorn on the courthouse square honors the defenders of the Alamo and the Alamo flag of 1824.

Capri Motel

US 64 runs 2,326 miles from Nags Head NC to Four Corners AZ through Raton NM, although is was never as famous as its sister Route 66. In Raton US 64 is lined with mid-twentieth century motels, most standing empty with "for sale" signs. The construction of Interstate 24 curtailed tourist traffic. Raton's retro motel signs are reminiscent of times past.
